Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange was born on the 29th of February 1980. He
emerged Speaker of the Benue State 8th House of Assembly in Benue, Nigeria on Friday, June
5, 2015. He becomes the second youngest
Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly after Barr. Emmanuel Jime
who was 30 years old and elected Speaker in 1993.
Interestingly, the 30-member House consists of 14 APC lawmakers, 15 PDP
members, and 1 Labour Party member. However, the ranking APC legislator
who is the immediate past Minority Whip of the 7th Assembly scored 17
votes to beat his rival of the PDP with 13 votes. Also, Mr. James Ejembi
of the PDP emerged Deputy Speaker with 16 votes against Joseph Ojobo of
the same party, who polled 14 votes.
With democracy in progress,
this would be the first time atleast in Benue when members of two
political parties in will be elected together as Speaker and Deputy
Speaker respectively. As time goes on, I expect to see that the mutual
suspicion that might begin with the House may ultimately turn to a
blessing in disguise for Benue citizens. Hence, everybody avoids banana
pills and so work for the good of the people rather than personal
aggrandizement.
All hail the Youth Speaker of Benue State! Make
us proud and show that we the youths are the leaders of this generation;
because tomorrow has come to stay!!
